ADDRESSING RACE AND INEQUALITY
IN SOUTH ORANGE AND MAPLEWOOD
Founded in 2016, SOMA Justice is a group of local volunteers working to promote racial justice and safe spaces for people of color (POC) in South Orange, Maplewood and surrounding communities in New Jersey. We focus on community activism and advocacy, education, and fellowship. We have more than 1,000 members who are active both through social media and in-person advocacy and engagement.
PROJECTS & OUTREACH
FOOD INSECURITY
Helping to provide our most vulnerable students with food through the Columbia High School / Cougar Cares food program.
SCHOOL SECURITY
AND POLICING ACTIVISM
Opposing ALICE, advocating against SROs in our schools, and holding police accountable through our participation in the Community Policing Boards.
COMMUNITY EDUCATION
Book clubs for adults and children, know your rights workshops, events during Black History Month in partnership with the Township of Maplewood, cultural celebrations, and training.
